First, our apologies for not getting in touch sooner. We expected to meet in a month, but the steering group came to the conclusion that here were was too little information available and too many planning ideas dependent upon First Ave not going through to Ash.

We met April 7th with the RAV station planner, Anita Molaro, Chris Robertson and engineer Donny Wong. These city staff welcomed our participation and ideas and indicated their willingness to work with us to address issues and amenities.

It seems that some of their ideas mesh with the ideas that came out of the planning, including: the continuation of wide sidewalk on east side of Cambie, across 6th to north side and a public space west of Bridge at RAV station, with pedestrian walkway past NEU building to the Creek. The parking along Spyglass for the marina will disappear. We were told there was no engineering preference for the flow of traffic from First Ave, west to Ash. We outlined our concerns with this option. Subsequently, we have written a letter stating our understanding that we would be involved in decisions, and not reacting to decisions already made.

Those at issue with our thinking was the crossing of 6th Ave. Eight lanes of road is not exactly pedestrian friendly, and the off ramp west from Cambie Bridge, that comes to a "T" intersection, is fixed and we think will be a traffic congested area.

Steering group discussion came up with these thoughts:

  • Eliminating thru traffic from First, along tracks to Ash was the key issue. All other planning priorities were dependent upon achieving this. If First Ave went through the traffic impacts for those living on Commodore would be considerable, and the plan to create a public space next to the Canada Line station, with a pedestrian promenade down to the Creek, would be severely compromised.
  • The consensus was that Dave Osborne should draw up a draft plan that incorporates the thrust of the planning session of March 29th. We will use that as reason to get in front of the senior city planners and engineers, and reinforcing our major - we will fight it all the way - opposition to the continuation of First.
  • The plan is drawn and now available to the steering committee, who will meet May 28th, Spyglass location, to review the draft plan. That plan, as amended, will be presented to you, the planning group, at a meeting June 11th, 7pm at Spyglass Rec centre. It will also be distributed widely to the most affected residents - along Commodore.
  • We will then request a meeting with the senior city group. We would anticipate that meeting later in June.
